Song Stories

Who You Are:
The concept of ‘identity’ has always been a personal one for me. Knowing who I am in Christ and who I am in the world has been a huge part of my testimony. This was the first song I wrote on this record. It came to me in a funny, yet memorable way. It was sometime in January 2008 and I went to bed early that night. I am not sure what provoked this dream but it went like this - I was standing on a stage in the middle of this huge open space. It was very dark; all I could see was a bunch of silhouettes. I knew there was a sea of people in front of me, but I could not make out a single face. My band was there with me, waiting for me to begin a song… the thing was I had no idea what I was playing. So I look up at the only light in sight, it was right above my head. The sky opened up and it was as if heaven began to sing the song I was supposed to play. As I heard it, I began the song… playing and singing everything I heard. I woke up from the dream actually humming it, words in mind and all! (This had never happened before!) I grabbed my recorder and guitar in the middle of night and played Who You Are as if I had known it for years!

Selfless Offering:
Isaiah could be one of my favorite books in the Bible. There are so many promises for God and picture of His heart for His people. In Isaiah 53 is a beautiful passage that opened my eyes to seeing Jesus for what He really is. It talks about how He lived with us, walked the same ground we did and without any glamour or celebrity to His lifestyle or persona. He was completely a Selfless Offering who gave himself up for love, asking for nothing in return other than that we just believe in Him. I wanted to write a song that recognized the choices Christ made as He walked the earth. True worship.

Secrets of Your Love:
This is a very special song to me because it truly came out of a spontaneous time of worship. I wrote this song with three other writers at a worship conference I attended in Nashville, TN called PWI (Pure Worship Institute). Robert Gonzalez, Chase Stockard, Craig Burner and myself sat down together one afternoon with no agenda to write a song, just simply worship. The Lord had put on my heart earlier that week the phrase “Secrets of Your Love” and 1 Corinthians 2. As we began to worship as a group, the Holy Spirit filled our time and this song was created.

I Am Yours:
“Your spirit beckons, my soul listens. I respond to the great God you are.” This phrase had been in my heart for months before I wrote I Am Yours. There was something about the word ‘beckons’ that struck me in a fresh way in referring to how God longs for me. Over the years, I have been learning that worship truly is our response to who God is. Psalms 62 reminds me, that it is in Him I am found, in Him I am saved, in Him I have victory. I belong to Him and Him alone for nothing else in the world has a hold on me.

Song of Creation:
For some time now have been feeling like I am simply joining a song that already exists. With my life, with my music, with my story. Song of Creation was written with this in mind. It was written as I was hearing a sermon at church. “Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.“ Psalms 95: 1-2. I wanted to write a song that was an invitation to the church. To join in with the heaven and all creation in an anthem they have been proclaiming forever. “For He is the Great God, King above all else.” These truths are timeless and will be declared by all things someday!

Invisible Solid:
Specific events that occur in daily life don’t typically inspire me to sit down and write. Invisible Solid was an exception. In 2008, fires broke out in Santa Barbara a hit Westmont College. One of my dearest friends, who had been attending the school at the time, was one of many students who lost all her possessions. It was a devastating time for the student body and my heart broke for the campus. I was scheduled to go play near campus about a month later and as I prepared for this, I felt the urge to bring them a word of encouragement to remind them of hope that cannot be taken anyway from them.

Secret Place: Psalms 139: 15-16
“My frame was not hidden from you, when I was made in the Secret Place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” I was sat in my backyard on a sunny San Diego afternoon. No one else was home; it was just me and the Lord. I remember that day I really needed to know that God saw me, even when no one else did. That there was not a thing I could keep from Him and not a thing I could do to make Him love me less. As I sought after the Lord that afternoon, He gently took me back to our Secret Place and I began to sing Him this song.

More Than a Conqueror: Romans 8
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose (v. 28)…If God is for us, who can be against us? (v. 31)… In all these things we are More Than a Conqueror through Him who loved us. (v. 37)” These are some of my favorite verses in the Bible, making this one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. Every time I read them I am reminded of the authority I have in Christ and the victory that has already been won for me on the Cross. The enemy can not touch me if I don’t want him to because I am covered with the blood of Christ. More Than a Conqueror is an anthem for this generation God is raising up today. By generation I don’t mean a specific age group, I mean those who are responding to the call of God RIGHT NOW. It is my prayer that when people hear and sing this song, that they would know that God has called them by name for a great purpose and all we have to do is embrace it!

Oh My Soul:
Psalm 42:5-6
“Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.
My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you…”
None of us stay on spiritual highs for long or have good circumstances constantly. Why? We are only human, living in a broken world. Even though this is reality, I do not want my faith or my willingness to praise to be dictated by my circumstances. God is worthy of worship despite the day I had. This song is a reflection of this deeper revelation. It is a declaration to God, that even when the world seems to be coming undone, I will choose remember who He has been and who He will be forever and ever!

Meant to Sing:
I used to get down on myself because I was never able to write a love song. Every time I would try, I would just end up with cheesy melodies and lyrics. So, instead of whining about it more I decided to bring my concerns and questions before God. “Is there something wrong with me… that I can’t just get out a love song?” “Do I not know how to love people, God?” “Why can so many other people do it and I can’t?” “How come I can write these other songs and not a good romantic tune?” As I sat on my roof top, it felt like God was smiling down on me laughing to Himself in all His tenderness and compassion. He said to me softly, “Oh Haley, it’s because I AM the song you’re Meant to Sing…” I have been at easy about it all ever since.

Haley Montgomery:
The Healing Power of Christian Music

By PHIL SWEETLAND Music+Radio contributor

NASHVILLE – The beautiful San Diego-based singer and songwriter Haley Montgomery grew up with two very different passions in her young life: figure skating and piano.

“What little girl wouldn’t want to stand in the middle of the ice in a pretty dress, and have thousands of people clap for you?” she says of skating.

Haley was both an excellent athlete and a fierce competitor, winning countless medals at Regional and even National events. Then something totally unexpected happened.

“It was at Nationals in Boston, and I was in front of thousands of people – the biggest crowd I’d ever skated for – and I’d never really fallen in competition before,” she says. “That day when my butt hit the ice, God was calling me to do so much more.”

The Father was pointing Haley towards music, but Lord knows that for Haley at first it was a tough choice.

“It was intense, I was disappointing a lot of people,” she says of the decision to end her competitive skating career. “For six months I went through some Depression, because my skating – my identity – was gone.”

But with the Christian love and mentoring of her mother Paige and of Worship Pastor Ron DePuy at her home church, Canyon View Christian Fellowship, something else happened to Haley. She began to find her musical voice.

“It was in those really hard six months that I wrote all my very first songs, all five of those songs that are on my EP,” she says. “I came out of that period with all of God’s blessing and anointing, because I was willing to surrender all the things I had been holding on to in this world. I started developing as a musician and as a worshiper.”

She had actually begun studying piano at age 5, and the same competitive drive and work ethic that took Haley to the highest levels of skating helped her become an outstanding pianist with a strong background in music theory.

As she transitioned from skating to music, she was also given a guitar. The instrument was completely new to her, but Haley quickly became proficient enough that she was writing on guitar as well as piano.

And while skating is an individual sport, worship teams and Christian music are group events. Haley soon discovered that she had a natural gift for leading and mentoring others. These days she often appears at several churches and conferences in a single weekend.

An early musical hero was Haley’s fellow Southern Californian Crystal Lewis, who has won multiple Dove Awards and achieved crossover Christian success recording albums both in English and Spanish. “My Mom’s heart for worship was and is an influence to the kind of worshiper I want to be,” Haley says. “I grew up singing in the church, love Gospel music, love jazz and Ray Charles. I love hip-hop. Clister is one of my favorite Christian rappers.”

Clister is a young artist who had grown up hard on the mean streets of San Diego.

Haley fused all these diverse influences, along with a very personal Christian message, into music that is both extremely accessible and powerfully uplifting. And for kids who are Haley’s own age or but dealing with grown-up crises, these songs couldn’t have come at a better time. Haley recently returned home from her first-ever musical trip to Nashville, where she met and impressed many of the leading label executives, music publishers, and songwriters in the Christian music industry. Back home, she and Clister are also co-writing.

“I’m writing and preparing this next album, which is about our identity in Christ,” she says. “It deals with the different dimensions and aspects of God’s character, and how we all reflect who God is.”

Haley Montgomery’s music and message have always reflected who she is, and we are all blessed to share her musical and spiritual journey.
